One of our readers wrote in with this same question, so I’m writing it up for everybody.
Just right-press the shortcut and choose Properties, then the Compatibility tab. Set the compatibility back to Windows 2000, and it might solve the crashing issues for you. The infuriating thing was that I could copy the profile to another machine, and it would work fine. I finally figured out the problem… The second I disabled that panel, Firefox stopped crashing. I’ve also heard of problems with the standard on-screen keyboard, but I haven’t confirmed those....
Remember to have POP enabled for your Gmail account. Open Thunderbird and go to Tools Account controls and smack the Add Account button. What if you could do it with a simple context menu item instead? Just save the file in the Windows directory and the rest of the hack should work for you. You could do the same thing from the command prompt, or in a script. Downloadable Registry Hack Simply download, extract, and double-choose CopyContentsToClipboardTXT.reg to the clipboard. you could remove the hacks with the RemoveCopyContentsToClipboard.reg file. Just remember to hold down the shift key while right-clicking on a text file....
Sure, it’s more secure… but what options do we have to make it less annoying? Note: Disabling or modifying UAC is a security risk. This is especially useful if you open a particular administrator-mode utility a dozen times per day. I’m curious what percentage of our readers have actually disabled UAC.
