The problem is caused if you have a large .pst or .ost file. I suppose the algorithm just couldn’t handle it, but at least there’s a fix now.

[This tip is for beginners only.] To show hidden files, open Control Panel and double-click onFolder Options. To show protected system files, just uncheck this box and a warning confirmation dialog box will appear. Click Yes to verify and you will then have access to system files and folders.

This setting can be modified if you only want to compress really old files. punch the Disk Cleanup button. The Disk Cleanup utility will scan your hard drive to determine the amount of space to be saved. In this resulting window you might change the amount of days to wait for unaccessed files to be compressed. ClickOKand you are done.

Just change the setting to “Optimize for performance” and hit OK to continue. You’ll have to reboot for the setting to take effect.

Related Windows Vista has a neat new feature for laptops called “hybrid sleep”. Windows used to have a fairly simple hardware suspend command called “standby”. With the OS state simmering in memory like that, entering and exiting sleep is nearly instantaneous. That’s where hybrid sleep comes in. This ensures that even if power is lost, the data will remain. This all sounds like a good idea, but in practice it’s just as slow as standby was....

The default action for searching with the Firefox toolbar is to pop pop the search in the current tab. Check the box for “Search bar” under the “Open tabs from” section. New Search Tab with Middle-Click

By default Windows XP reserves 10% of your hard drive for the bin. you might resize individual drive or all of them globally. Before starting, I would recommend emptying the bin first.
