By using Bluetooth beacons.

Information flows unidirectionally, from beacons to smartphones, so they’re not a privacy concern.

The beacons themselves are basic battery-powered controllers, too, employing low-powered Bluetooth technology.

You may have to update the app first before seeing the new feature in action.

If the next tunnel you drive through has Bluetooth beacons, you won’t see your Maps experience interrupted.
