This is not a simple question to answer.

The internet is called the “world wide web” for a reason.

Businesses, organizations, and individuals around the world are creating websites all the time.

The number is constantly changing.

As of November 2022, there are estimated to be nearly 2 billion websites on the internet.

The live counter on Internet Live Stats is at 1,996,172,229 as I’m writing this sentence.

It will be different when you look at it.

That’s a lot of websites.

But what qualifies a “website”?

This is the best guess we can get at the number of websites on the internet.

How Many Are Active?

The next question is how many of those nearly 2 billion websites are actually active?

Is it the same as social media connection profiles—only a small percentage are being used?

That may seem low, but 25% of 2 billion is 500 million.

That’s still a lot of websites.

Is the Number Getting Bigger?

According to some sources, that’s not true.

The graphs fromNetcraftshow a relatively flat line over the last two years.

Perhaps the internet is not ever-growing.

However, this is just one data point.
