Proton Mail is the privacy-friendly alternative to Gmail, Outlook.com, and other email services, with end-to-end encryption and other security improvements.

It took a while, but theres now an official Proton Mail desktop app for Windows and macOS, with a Linux version on the way.

Proton Mails unique encryption means it doesnt work out of the box with popular email applications, such as Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail, or Mozilla Thunderbird.

That means youre stuck with the official Proton Mail app on mobile devices, and on desktop platforms, you had to use the web app orrun the Proton Mail Bridgeas an interconnect for standard email apps.

Proton said in a blog post, Proton Mails desktop app offers users the robust end-to-end encryption of Proton Mail and Proton Calendar, with the convenience of a dedicated desktop app.

With the launch of Proton Mails desktop app, users can get the productivity benefits of a desktop app, safe in the knowledge that their privacy is secured.

[…] The increased functionality provided by a desktop app is something that other big providers such as Gmail and Yahoo dont provide, and is a feature often requested specifically by business customers looking for the ease of use with the privacy and security of Protons end-to-end encryption.

The Proton Mail software is based on the Proton web app, with easy switching between mail and calendar, automatic updates, and partial offline support.

Its a shame that Proton Mail isnt a fully-native desktop app, but if thats important to you, you’ve got the option to still use your favorite third-party email app with the Proton Mail Bridge installed.

The new Proton Mail desktop app isnow available to downloadfor Windows and macOS, and the Linux version is currently in beta.

Free users will be able to try out the app with a 14-day free trial, but after that, youll need one ofProtons paid plans.

The Mail Plus plan is $3.99 per month when paid annually ($47.88/year), or you could get all of Protons apps with paid features with Proton Unlimited for $9.99/mo when paid annually ($119.88/yr).
